Okay - here we go! 1. Pop Pop Featuring Mikkey HalstedA really good opener to the album that sets the tone brilliantly - only small gripe is it gets a bit repetitive after a couple of minutes (8/10)2. Street Dreams Featuring At WillThis is what TQ does best! A catchy chorus and the subject matter is pure TNSMC. Probably the best guest appearance on the album too. (9/10)3. Kind Of BlueWill I ever get over not having the original version of this?! The lyrics and subject matter are spot on but the beat is just far too overproduced and is just a poor replacement for what we heard before. (5/10)4. HollywoodI must be the only person who doesn't love this track - it's really catchy but is maybe a bit too commercial for my tastes and is a bit watered down compared to T's usual style. Very well produced though. (8/10)5. Valentines DayA song I didn't like at first hearing but it's really grown on me - again the lyrics and some of T's high notes are great but it's a bit overproduced - there's just too much going on! (7/10)6. UT's version of Metallica's 'Nothing Else Matters'. Not a bad cover but the chorus is a bit laboured - I guess this will be a grower but it's one of the weaker tracks. (6/10)7. The Fastlane Featuring Gla$ses MaloneA great track to drive to! The beat is another pure TQ number and the lryrics are faultless. (10/10)8. FrostyA great story to this one - it gets you visualising the situation and adds real depth to the album. Wonder if it's based on a true story?! (9/10)9. Blue LitesAnother great upbeat driving song! TQ's at his best when he sings "I'm in a high speed chase, across the golden state"! Cla$sic! (9/10)10. TroubleNot really feeling this as much as everyone else - maybe it's because the beat isn't raw enough. A good track just nothing T hasn't already done before. (7/10)11. Dirty Diana Tribute To Michael JacksonIt's great to finally have this track but T doesn't add much new to it - he's always best when doing original tracks (although I loved his cover version of 'All of my life'). (6/10)12. Bad Girl Featuring Ying Yang TwinsSomething about this beat makes me laugh! Some great singing from T but doesn't have the depth of the rest of the album - and the Ying Yang Twins?! Yuk! (6/10)13. WettThe beat on this is SICK! I love the build up intro and how it kicks in - the lyrics are great as well and T sings a brilliant chorus (10/10)14. 2NiteAnother brilliant throwback to TNSMC. Sort of a sequel to 'I Get Around'. The beat and lyrics are just perfection (10/10)15. MamacitaA real catchy track with some great production and vocals. It's just the subject matter that's been done many times before (but never quite a slick as this!) (8/10)16. CryA fantastic beat and some of T's most heartfelt lyrics. The Vibekingz obviously work really well with T and get his style and their produced tracks are also the best on the album. (10/10)17. UnbelievableAnother great beat and some great lyrics. T's singing really cuts to the heart. This track is like a sequel to 'A Little Bit of Love' from 'Paradise'. (10/10)18. GirlfriendThis is one of my favourite tracks on the album - a really different beat and the first few lines are dynamite "The girls they love it when I speed!" (10/10)19. Kill JillI actually LOVE this track! Took a bit of listening but it's got a real style of it's own and T is always best when he's telling a story (9/10)21. Centerfold and the remixesThe original version is by far the best of this. The remixes are just for the collection really. Compliments the album really well and a nice story. (8/10)22. Electronic and the remixesHeard this way back as the 'This That' demo (and in many ways prefer that version - apart from the 'rapping'!) The best version is the one with Tha Vill and is good fun if nothing extraordinary. (7/10)OVERALL: An excellent album with just a few things stopping it being a cla$sic (the overproduction of some tracks and missing the original version of 'Kind of Blue'). It's definitely T's best album for years and falls just short of TNSMC - I can see this being on heavy rotation for years to come!

There are few artists anymore whose album release dates are marked on my calendar. This is a major change from about 10 years ago when I stopped in Sam Goody, F.Y.E., etc. nearly every Tuesday checking out what just dropped. Even with recent releases from Jay-Z and Lil Wayne's affilliates (two of my favorites), in all honesty I had not purchased a physical CD since John Legend's Evolver and before that probably The Carter III.
There is only one artist whose releases I purchase and have to have as soon as possible and that is TQ. I had never purchased a "digital-only" copy of anything until the Snocap version of Gemini was released. This has changed, though I still prefer the hard copy as well, with the release of "S.E.X.Y." and a different version of "Gemini".
Even though these aformentioned CD's satisfied the appetite for good R&B music, there is nothing like an official TQ cd release. Take "Paradise" for example. This album got so much play from me and became an instant cla$sic. I know some fans weren't feeling this release but songs like Paradise feat. Krayzie Bone, Soulja, SEXY, Ain't The Same, Pumpin, I Don't Know, and A Little Bit of Love were on repeat on my iTunes, iPod, car cd player, basically everywhere. Granted there were some tracks that I skipped over regularly (Proud Mary and Ebony Eyes).
Paradise was still getting play from me when I heard the great news. TQ was dropping a new album called Kind of Blue. He previewed the title track on YouTube and definitely had my attention. Other leaks/previews/snippets followed and really garnered interest in my household (the wife, a usual girl pop/r&B fan, loves TQ now).
I was hesitant to order the Limited Edition of "Kind of Blue" at first because of the inclusion of two tracks in which I wanted to hear/own the original versions of. Electronic and Centerfold were both tracks that I had heard and were feeling so seeing that I would only get the Bandman and Rock Remixes of these tracks made me apprehensive until I realized iTunes and Amazon would be carrying the other versions. Plus, after hearing Dirty Diana on Youtube I was instantly hooked and had to have this (more on that later).
So I ordered my limited edition version and purchased the tracks that didn't come on it. It was cool getting just an autograph on "Paradise" but TQ upped the ante on this one and actually wrote a personal message to his fans. Another reason why I can drop $15 on releases from this artist and know that it is much deserved!
On first listen, I was both impressed with many songs and disappointed with others. Some have since grown on me but still some of the one's I was hyped about listening to, including the title track, had their beats changed dramatically. The YouTube version of the track "Kind of Blue" outshines the official release version drastically. I still occasionally go to that vid and listen to the first verse and chorus and think "Why not this one?" I'm sure T will address this in the future and I'm even more hopeful that the other version becomes available soon.
In addition to the letdown from that track, I reallly wasn't feeling Frosty, Blue Lites, of Trouble even though gauging by the message board discussions on Thugpoetry.com I may be alone in these a$sessments. Girlfriend and Kill Jill, both not included on the Limited Edition version but purhcaseable on iTunes and Amazon, are also lacking in my opinion.
Why focus on the negative though, when there is so much positive on Kind of Blue? Because I have to get that part of the review out of the way first so readers know theres much more on the CD than what has been mentioned. "Street Dreams", "Wett", "Centerfold", "FastLane", and "Valentine's Day" are all memorable tracks. I've read one review say AtWill provides the best guest verse on the CD, and while I agree it is better than Gla$ses Malone's appearance on FastLane, he is still outshined by another artist (more on that later and no I'm not talking about the Ying Yang Twins!).
Now lets look at the standout tracks from "Kind of Blue." "PopPop", "Electronic", "Hollywood", "U", "Dirty Diana", "Bad Girl", "2Nite", "Mamacita", "Cry", and "Unbelievable" are all some of my personal favorites from the CD. Mamacita has a Product G&B "Maria, Maria" feel to it with the subject matter and beat. 2Nite and Unbelievable are songs that easily could've appeared on other TQ albums and stood out as welll. Electronic and the subsequent remixes are perfect lead singles. My personal favorite is the version with Tha Vill and the original that starts, "Its time to turn the radio off/ Cuz they don't wanna give me what I want.
Bad Girl feat. The Ying Yang Twins sounds perfect in the car. Its a lot better than "In My Lap" from Paradise but I like both of them as they serve their purpose, are catchy and could definitely see them getting play in the clubs. "Hollywood" is another track with a lot of potential. If T does a video for it, I could really see it catching on and getting a lot of airplay. I almost could see it as a lead soundtrack single from a movie based on the West Coast.
"U", T's rendition of a Metallica's "Nothing Else Matters", shows his ability to standout on his takes of other artists' songs (see Hotel California, Adore, All of My Life, Listen).
Even more convincing of TQ's ability to flip a legendary artists version of a song is the inclusion of "Dirty Diana" on the limited version of the CD. Now most artists would be doing the legendary Michael Jackson a disservice by trying to cover one of his songs but T puts a modern spin on it and it comes out on fire. The addition of the crowd cheering in the background was questionable though. If he left this track EXACTLY how it appeared on the YouTube version it would have been perfect. It's still great but could've reached the "Westside", "Gone But Not Forgotten", "Dolce Vita", (plus many more) levels in which I rate all TQ songs.
There is a song on Kind of Blue that, in my opinion, is on the level of those aformentioned cla$sics. "Pop Pop" feat. Mikkey Halsted is the best track on "Kind of Blue." It serves as an unofficial intro to the album and gets the adrenaline flowing everytime I hear it. Mikkey, another former Cash Money Records artist, has the best guest appearance on the CD and shows, along with "Soulja" from Paradise, the chemistry these two artists have together. I would trade a T-Hud/TQ compilation for a TQ/Mikkey one anyday! After reading the blog by TQ and the story behind this track it makes it even more memorable. You can feel the mindstate and environment of TQ at this point in his life.
Overall, Kind of Blue is a solid effort from one of the few artists in all of musice who stays dedicated to his fans and has not turned his back on them. Will it reach the critical acclaim that his debut reached? Probably not but TQ is consistently putting out great music and in my opinion getting better/more diverse with time. Kind of Blue in comparison has more standout tracks than Listen, Paradise, or the digital cds that have been released. It shows that there is still hope in a fading music landscape full of artists selling out in order to make a quick dollar. In the words of Jay-Z, another artist who has achieved longevity in a here today gone tomorrow industry, a perfect message to TQ would be from The Blueprint 2 intro track "Dreams": "REMIND YOURSELF, NOBODY BUILT LIKE YOU, YOU DESIGNED YOURSELF. JUST KEEP DOING YA THING, SAY NO MORE."

After listening to the full release for the last month. here is my full review...
I was just a young man living in a nowhere Ohio city... It was a nice sunny day and I was trolling BET and MTV lookin for new music. A duotone looking music video came on and the first thing I noticed was the beat sampled the same as 2pac's "Dear Mama". Usually hearing something that samples anything invloving 2pac sets me into fight mode. But this cat had style and he wasn't biting from Pac. By the time this video was over I was kind of anxious for the credits to see who the artist was. It was TQ, the video was "Westside" and it was 1998. I jumped on the internet and searched for info... you gotta remember this was 1998, mp3's were hard to find and CD burners where even rarer. MP3 Players didn't exist outside of a computer. I found out the CD Single street date and purchased it on release day and played it daily for weeks. The album was set to release a couple months later and I had all intentions of buying it. But, I didn't. I started getting in alot of trouble at school and at home and ended up in a Juvenile Detention Center for a minute and the album and everything else slipped my mind. Fast forward 6 months....
I just turned 18 and I was in Miami Florida for vacation checking out the CD selection at the mall. I couldn't find anything that looked interesting that I didn't already have. I wanted something fresh. Then I came across TQ's "They Never Saw Me Coming". Only hearing "Westside" and "Bye Bye Baby" I hadn't heard any reviews of the album at this point but I decided it was worth checkin out. I popped the CD in my player when I got in the car and listened to it for the next hour riding through Florida. I was impressed. I played the whole album 2-3 times a day for the next week. It was partying, alcohol, weed, great music, sunshine, beautiful women, and the beach. It was Paradise. That's where my mind goes each time I listen to a TQ song. Sunshine and a good time. Fast Forward 11 years...
It's a hard pill to swallow when one of your favorite artists drops a sh!tty album. So after hearing the two lead singles "Electronic" and "Centerfold" for TQ's new album, I was kind of worried. This isn't the formula for any past TQ album. Dance & Pop R&B is somewhat rare from TQ and as the two lead singles... what kind of album can "Kind Of Blue" be? After listening to the album for the past few weeks I can happily say a Very Good one.
The album has a variety of different style songs. From slightly dark songs like "Frosty", "Trouble" and the metallica influenced "U" with rock guitar samples to the songs "2Nite" and "Mamacita" that sound like they were born from his cla$sic "They Never Saw Me Coming" album. For those looking for cla$sic TQ music with thought provoking substance "Hollywood", "Cry" and "Unbelievable" are sure to be favorites. The ladies will fall in love with songs like "Wett", "Girlfriend" and "Valentine's Day" while guys looking for something harder will have "Pop Pop", "The Fastlane" & "Bad Girl" bumping in their trunk.
No matter what style of TQ music you like the best or whether you're looking for something new and different, this album has it all. That is, a$suming you get all the songs.
1 Pop Pop ft Mikkey - An amazing track. I kinda burnt myself out on this track by listening to the snippet too much. No matter if you like TQ or not you have to admit this ones great. 10/10
2 Strret Dreams ft At Will - Something missing from this song. I don't know what but it's a cool track. Big fan of At Will. 7/10
3 Electronic (Electrik Mix) - I can't say I'm a big fan of any of the versions of electronic. If I had to pick it would probably be the Electrik Mix. 6/10
4 Centerfold (Acoustic Mix) - I'm not a fan of the original and the Rock RMX is decent. The version I'm feelin is the Acoustic mix. 7/10
5 Kind Of Blue - Great track. I'm not one of those people that was stuck on the youtube version. Personally I think that version sounded really girly and something you'de hear in a white dance club. Glad TQ switched it up. 7.5/10
6 Hollywood - Should be the next single. Should have been the opening single. Amazing track. Has the stuff Westside was made out of. Hopefully T gets this released as a single soon! 10/10
7 Valentine's Day - Kind of girl-ish but I can't deny TQ's flow is off the chain on this track. 8/10
8 U. - Definately was scared and excited at the same time to hear TQ covered one of Metallica's best songs and one of my favorites: "Nothing Else Matters". It definately doesn't use much from the song but the guitar intro's. I think he did a great job on this track. One of my favorites on the album. 9.5/10
9 The Fastlane - Great flow on this track. The chorus sounds a little empty. I think there isnt enough done to the beat to distinguish between the regular verses and the chorus. The verses are the best part of the song. 8/10
10 Frosty - Another one of my favorites off the album. Alot darker than most of his tracks but I dig it. I see alot of people complaining about not liking the beats on some of these songs. It's the guitar. They have a rock feel. But I love it. It's evolution. 10/10
11 Blue Lites - This song is just good tome. Nothing great. It's entertaining and worth listening to. But it's definitely not going to take you on an emotional trip like most of the songs. Definitely needed on the album though. 7/10
12 Kill Jill - Another really dark song. Kind of surprised T but a song with this subject matter on the album. Glad he did though. 8/10
13 Trouble - A great track. A favorite of mine. Has a rock beat. I noticed some people don't like that. It's alright who cares what they think. It's a great song. I can relate to this song alot. 10/10
14 2Nite - Probably one of my favorite songs from TQ in years. This one right here sounds like it was born from TNSMC. I'm not saying that because it's amazing, I'm saying that becuase it sounds like it would actually fit on that album. 10/10
15 Dirty Diana - This has always been my favorite MJ song. That being said I don't actually like this one that much. I think T did a great job, but the original is already embedded in my mind as cla$sic. Having heard the full demo version that was played on youtube I can say this version is better. 8/10
16 Bad Girl ft Yin Yang Twins - Ah I'm not feeling this song as much as the rest of the album. 7/10
17 Wett - Another amazing track. One of the best on the album. 10/10
18 Mamacita - At the first couple listens I just thught it was average. But after a few times of listening to the song all the way through I think it's one of the best on the album. 9.5/10
19 Cry - A little soft for me but I can't deny it's one of the best on the album. TQ's flow is sick. 9.5/10
20 Girlfriend - Took a couple listens before I found my opinion on this one. It's a great track. 9.5/10
21 Unbelievable - This is probably my second favorite track on the album, right behind 2Nite. Another one of the best songs I've heard from TQ in years. Love the rap by TQ at the end. 10/10
Overall album review: 9/10

1. Pop Pop Great song. The blog TQ wrote about this makes this song come to life more. Sick rap from Mikkey Halsted. 8/10
2. Street Dreams Cla$sic TQ subject matter and finally a guest verse from At Will on a TQ album. 7.5/10
3. Electronic I prefer the version with Tha Vill. Good song to use as your alarm at 5:15am. 9/10
4. Centerfold I’m not a big fan of the Rock Remix. The Acoustic Remix is a waste of studio time if you ask me. The original grew on me a lot. 8/10
5. Kind of Blue I see everybody complaining about the beat on the album version, but I like it the way it is. Sure, I would like to hear it with the original beat, but I doubt it would have been better. Good album cut, but not a standout song. 7/10
6. Hollywood. Cla$sic TQ. At first I didn’t get what all the fuzz was all about, but this song is so good… 9.5/10
7. Valentine’s Day I didn’t like this when I first heard it on Facebook, but this became one of my favorite songs of the year so far. Glad to see TQ’s improving with uptempo tracks. 9/10
8. U. Love it! 9/10
9. The Fastlane The lyrics deserved a better song. The song is alright, nothing outstanding. 6.5/10
10. Frosty Sick, dark song! Up there with Hollywood! 9.5/10
11. Blue Lites Should have been a single. Reminds me of TSC. 9/10
12. Kill Jill Another dark song and I love it. This one, as well as Frosty, have a rock feel to it. It fits TQ. 9.5/10
13. Trouble See Kill Jill and Frosty, but where’s Gillie Da Kid’s verse?? 9.5/10
14. 2Nite fu©k me! This is brilliant. 10/10
15. Dirty Diana Don’t like this a lot. TQ should have picked a slow MJ song to remake. This just doesn’t fit him. 5/10
16. Bad Girl It’s not as bad as Put It In My Lap and I’m glad The Ying Yang Twinz have a verse on a horrible track and not a good one. 2/10
17. Wett Sick! Nasty! I love the beat! 9.5/10
18. Mamacita It takes a few spins, but this song is really good. 8.5/10
19. Cry Kind of reminds me of Bone Thugs during the chorus. Great song! 9/10
20. Girlfriend I like how the beat works up to the chorus. Single worthy! 9/10
21. Unbelievable Perfect song to close the album. TQ put his heart and soul into this track. One of the best songs in his catalog. 10/10
If I could have handpicked the songs the tracklist would have looked like this. This would have been a cla$sic album. 1. Pop Pop (feat. Mikkey Halsted) 2. Street Dreams (feat. At Will) 3. Centerfold (Original Version) 4. Electronic (feat. Tha Vill) 5. Blue Lites 6. Valentine’s Day 7. Hollywood 8. Frosty 9. Kill Jill 10. Trouble 11. U. 12. 2Nite 13. Wett 14. Mamacita 15. Cry 16. Girlfriend 17. Unbelievable
All in all I think this is a great album that could have been better if a few songs were left off. The way the album was build up is reminiscent of Gemini, where the ‘street’ songs ended up on the first half and the love songs ended up on the second half. Only this time around TQ shined more on the love half. The album has a lot of replay value; something you don’t see often anymore. TQ made a well rounded album, whereas the trend nowadays is to make an album with as many guests and as many producers as possible and two standout tracks. The rock influenced and the electronic beats fit TQ well. The sound has changed, but the quality is still there. TQ made what he is best at: an album for the mind and soul.
